When you are hurting, it can be hard to think or even speak. If you are new to faith, it can be especially hard to figure out how to pray when you’re hurting.

I’ve been getting a lot of messages in church about spiritual warfare and perseverance. Naturally, I had no idea what that meant. Now, after crying for a few days straight, uh I think I know.

When I don’t understand what I’m feeling or what is wrong, I can turn on music and connect with God. This has been true, especially this week.
As the music plays, I simply talk to God and repeat whatever word speaks to me from the songs.

I want to share some of my favorite songs to encourage you. And to allow you to release any hurt or negative emotion.

Please keep in mind, music is not the only way you can connect with God. It’s just one of those ways that work for me. There are so many different ways to connect with God. You can:

  • Use Scriptures from the Bible
  • Google “Spiritual Warfare Prayers”
  • Pray with someone
  • Sing your prayers
  • Worship with a dance

There are no limits. Just be yourself.

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. (1 Peter 5:7, NLT)

How To Pray For Help When You’re Hurting

God knows my heart and whatever could be wrong. I like that I don’t have to have everything figured out for God to sweep in and love on me. When I am hit with a lot of confusion and frustration, these songs spoke to me:

1. GAWVI – Fight For Me ft. Lecrae

The best part about this song is that it’s Hip-Hop! I remember thinking that I couldn’t listen to certain types of music because it didn’t sound like a typical Gospel record. It took me a while to stop being overly religious and focus on the message of every song regardless of the genre.

I had been literally searching for permission to listen to genres that I’ve always loved. And I gained so much freedom knowing that our taste for music doesn’t need to be reduced to only Christian music.

The best advice I can give you is to pay attention to what you are listening to. If a song has a message that aligns with God’s word, why can’t you listen to it? Here are some other songs that ministered to me too:

2. Yolanda Adams – The Battle Is Not Yours

3. Todd Dulaney – Victory Belongs To Jesus

How To Thank God For Trials When You’re Hurting

Yep, you read that right. At times, I know when to thank the Lord for trials because I know He is growing me in certain areas. So while I’m in pain, I like to sing songs like these:

4. William McDowell- Intercession
This entire revival album is everything. My favorite line from this song is “If You can use anything, Lord, You can use me, Jesus. ”

How To Pray ‘I Love You’ When You’re Hurting

For situations when I feel lost or lonely, I use these songs to reach out to God. Other times, when I’m not hurting, I may need God to soften my heart toward Him. This is honestly my way of remaining in Him and staying focused by expressing my gratitude.

5. Steffany Gretzinger – Open Up (Spontaneous Worship)

6. Peyton Allen | Bethel Music Worship- Build My Life

7. Travis Greene – Made A Way

8. JJ. Hairston & Youthful Praise – You Deserve It

9. Israel Houghton – Reckless Love

How To Pray ‘I Need You’ When You’re Hurting

For situations where I know God is working on my behalf, I still seek encouragement. I need to connect with God because so many outside sources go against His promises. It’s a way to declare that my trust is still in the Lord.

10. Tyler Perry – Father Can You Hear Me

11. Jonathan David Helser – Abba

12. Anthony Brown & group therAPY – Trust in You

13. TY Bello, Sinach and George – BE QUIET ft. Spirit of David (Spontaneous Worship)

14. Who You Say I Am – Hillsong Worship

15. ORU Worship Center – Let Praises Rise

There are so many more songs I love but I really hope this list helped. And just know that it’s okay for songs to speak to you differently. What songs help you pray when you’re hurting? Leave a comment below.
